PSSR Coffee Machine Test
If you own a commercial coffee machine that uses pressurised steam, and is older than 14 months from date of new supply, can prove to be a risk that you may want to avoid. This is because you have a statutory obligation to meet the stringent legal requirement of the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000
The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 require pressure systems to be inspected in accordance with a Written Scheme of Examination, The test is designed to prevent serious injury from the hazard of stored energy. The Regulations apply to owners and users of systems containing ‘relevant fluids’, (which include steam, gases under pressure and any fluids kept artificially under pressure and which become gases when released into the atmosphere). The term ‘fluids’ includes gases and liquids which are capable of exerting a vapour pressure. Coffee Machine boiler operates at 100°C and over, it comes under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations.
If you continue to use an espresso machine with a steam boiler without the required testing, you will be in contravention of the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 which will firstly, invalidate a comprehensive insurance claim made regarding any incident on that machine.
Commercial coffee boilers incorporating a pressure vessel (e.g. cappuccino makers) generate steam and therefore come under this requirement of PSSR. PSSR Test inspection procedure will include:
- Completely Shut the coffee machine down
- Strip down the coffee machine by a espresso service engineer
- Drain out the boiler and remove heating element.
- Then the certified engineer will start to examim the pressure boiler
- Once the engineer has finished his inspection, he or she will reassemble the coffee machine and change the heating element gasket.
- The Machine will then be tested to full pressure (1.7-.1.9 Bar) to see if the safety valve function correctly and opens at the designated pressure it is been built for (usually 1.8 Bar).
- After all of that has been done the engineer will submit the finding to our support team who will then issue a PSSR Test Certificate for the coffee machine to indicate it has passed
- If the machine fails for any reason and cannot be repaired within the allotted testing period, (spare part required and not available) then a second inspection visit will have to be arranged and your machine cannot be used until it has been passed.
